Much to my dismay as the CT Novelist, Chrono Trigger only uses the vague reference "G" as the currency throughout the game. If you were to define what "G" actually was for the novel, what do you think works best? (Note that the new Demo Release uses Gil.)

Make them more realistic. Calling currency 'Gold' is rather silly, and 'Gil' has no real connection. I suggest having two coins, made of gold and silver, called Crowns and Swords respectively. One would be etched with the Guardia Crown, representing the obvious, the other etched with a sword, representing the Masamune which is fairly iconic of Guardia. Possibly have only one coin, and if so, make it silver. You hardly ever see real medieval gold coins, almost all were silver.

corsair does make a good suggestion. in fact, i rather like it. though i disagree with the point you make on gil, mostly because while it doesn't have a solid connection, 90% of fantasy money doesn't, so i don't believe that should be an issue.

i'd have to say, though, i'm backing your idea for the two coins.

First of all, this isn't Final Fantasy. That's a good enough reason not to have it. And second, I wouldn't want Gil in any Final Fantasy Novel either.

Not a bad idea, though I don't think I would call it Swords (too confusing and sounds a little funny for a currency).

Gil, of course, was thought to be the "intended" meaning of G since that's the only currency I know of Square has ever used that also starts with a G. I'd say it's insignificant enough to do what we want to with it, though.

I vote gold as in medieval days that's what they used. And CT is only done by the same creators of Final Fantasy. If it comes to that, Kingdom Hearts has "Munny" not Gil.

Actually, they mostly used silver for their coins in the Middle Ages, and they didn't call them 'Gold' or 'Silver'. They had names. Sesterces, for example, were made out of either bronze or silver, it changed occasionally. Babylonian Shekels are another one.

why not have a coin w/a shield on it? perfectly reasonable since this is the kingdom of guardia.

Because Shields aren't a symbol of Guardia. The Masamune, on the other hand, is.

my thought was guardia->guard->shield
besides, there's no reason why a country can't have multiple symbols
and if we're looking for currency, it's at least worth suggesting.

Actually, that relation is not canonical. Guardia could mean any number of things.

Whoever said the Masamune was a symbol of Guardia?

As far as symbols go, this is the only hint we're ever given as to a symbol of the land. This thing.

Anyway, I don't really care about the name of the currency, although if given a choice between gold or gil, I'd probably go with the latter.

Actually, you've got a point there. The Masamune is never really stated to be a Guardian Symbol. And that crest doesn't even make sense, there are no dragons in Chrono Trigger.

of course, there IS the dragon tank.
buuuuut i'm pretty sure that doesn't quite make the grade...

and if you think about CC for a moment [i know this is a tangent, sorry!], dragons were actually AGAINST humanity and FOR the reptites, so in a way they have as a symbol a being that will try to destroy mankind...

I think it means Gold because I think that is what Gill means. I think it should be gold and silver. But that every one rates things on a Gold standard. i.e. 10 silver makes 1 gold etc. However the idea about two currencies with weird names is okay i think.

I think Gil sounds really weird for a currency. They used that in Final Fantasy?? never noticed. Anyway I think Gold just appears way to 'standart', which ChronoTrigger is definetly not in any way ^^
Using 2 currencies like Gold/Silver is much better, and if you add two unique names to it, i think we've got ourselves a winner. What was the name of the "shiny red stone" that they used to forge the MasaMune with? Maybe that could be one of them.

The stone to which you refer is called Dreamstone.

As far as the currency is concerned, it doesn't matter to me a whole lot either way. For those of you who think the G is short for Gil, consider the fact that they don't call it Gil in Chrono Cross. If it was meant to be short for Gil, the only reason I can think of to do that is space limitations... but for 2 measly characters? Besides, they wouldn't have had such limitations with the PSX, so why is it still just G? I always just assumed that it was meant to be gold pieces. I could live with Shillings, simply Coins, Gold, Gold Pieces, or Gil. You can call them cheez-its for all I care, really. I'd prefer not using Gil if it can be helped, just to keep Final Fantasy out of this. However, it's not all that important.

In response to the comment about Squaresoft only ever using Gil in their games for currency, Brave Fencer Musashi never really names a currency. They just use a US dollar sign. Tobal No. 1 uses Molmorans, and Seiken Densetsu 3 uses something called "Luc." I'm guessing that's an abbreviation... What for, your guess is as good as mine. Seiken Densetsu 3, for those of you who don't know, is the sequel to Secret of Mana(Seiken Densetsu 2), which is the sequel to Final Fantasy Adventure(Seiken Densetsu, the original). I'm curious to know what the other Seiken Densetsu games use for currency. Then there's the Saga series, as well. And I can't remember what Final Fantasy Tactics uses, but I don't remember it being Gil.

Personally, the currency isn't a big deal to me, either. "Gil" seemed to fit pretty well for a Square RPG story, as there was no way I was going to keep it as just "Gold." So, I've gone with that for now. Doesn't mean it HAS to stay that way, but I don't think it's worth changing it at this point.

As for saving space, I always thought it was an interesting choice to use "Crono's Mom" instead of "Gina." Silly Americans.
