I'd like to get some thoughts on one of the very last scenes in the Black Omen, where an image/figure of each of the main characters (minus Magus) is suspended in its own sort of preservation tube.

What does this mean? Why are these images here?

That...is something I have considered before and I have yet to come up with a suitable answer.

I'll come back later with an answer that will hopefully redeem me from this practically pointless post (or a P3 for short). :lol

Umm... same as LG, but doubting coming back with an answer. It's always been one of those things where I go 'hmm', shrug my shoulders, and continue on without thinking much about it.

I think they're trying to clone the party. I suspect that Square planned to have you fight a 'Mirror Party' in the Black Omen, but decided to scrap the idea or couldn't implement it in time for release, so they just left the floating cylinders to give you the creeps.

That's something that crossed my mind.

It's also possible that Zeal wanted to study the party, so she created those suspended character thingies.
Just something that came to me a while ago.

Corsair's idea sounds plausible, though there's not much I can do with that for the novel. I'm not sure the study theory is all that plausible because the Queen, already feeling practically immortal, probably wouldn't have felt the need to clone "mere mortals" like them. I guess that thought really goes for both theories, when you think about it.

Perhaps the meaning could be more symbolic. Maybe Queen Zeal suspended forms of them asleep, or "dead," in the tubes to illustrate that they were about to fall into an eternal slumber at the hands of Lavos. Just another thought, of course.

I can't help but wonder why Magus sin't present, though.

On a first thought, one could assume that the creators chose not to include him since he was optional. But assuming the player did spare Magus, I doubt it would've been that much of a hassle to include him for that scenario specifically.

I think it would be equally odd to have him there(depending on the reason I guess), as he's from Zeal. Queen Zeal studying a suspended clone of her adult son is kind of weird. Although Queen Zeal isn't really so much Queen Zeal anymore, and may not even recognize him as her son.

What does him coming from Zeal have to do with anything? I don't think it likely that Zeal studied every single person who ever lived in the kingdom at one point or another.

Well no, of course she didn't recognize her son. Nobody recognized him, not even Schala. To them, he wasn't anything more than The Prophet who popped out of nowhere.

Even when he revealed himself, though, she didn't say anything. You'd think she would have if she'd recognized him.

So this leaves us with two options to explain the suspended figures so far: 1) as a deterrent and 2) for research.

Looking at research, my question would be WHY? She thinks of them as "mere mortals," practically like bugs compared to her and the power she gets from Lavos. Why would she see the need to study them if she doesn't see them as a threat? Beyond that, how did she get the clones in the first place?

Looking at the deterrent route, you could make the same argument: WHY? Why would she try to scare them away with "sleeping" clones if she didn't see them as a threat?

Or, as I mentioned before, the point could simply be symbolic.

Well, you could make a case for Zeal being interested on how 'mere humans' had survived so long. They'd be ideal candidates for Super Soldiers.

But I thought she was already directly tapped into Lavos's power via the Mammon Machine, which explained her ability to live in all of the different time periods, minus 65 million B.C.

It is very possible that they are clones made for Lavos to gain power from. Not power in the sense of energy but power in the sense of magical powers and physical ability. Remember how Lucca (or Robo I can't remember which) says that Lavos extracts the DNA of every living creature to become the ultimate form of evolution on the planet? They are arguably the six most powerful living beings on the planet.

I figure that Magus was left out because Queen Zeal figured that the Prophet didn't have the powers that the others had. Either that or the programmers left him out in case you decided to kill him. We could always put him in there to ease confusion.
